Well I dont't know about anyone else, but for me every shot i make, every scene finished is a step closer.... and to say that people are only interested in how many posts they have is insane. Everyone on this board is just as dedicated, and anyone who is dedicated enough will make it. As for me, I'm getting there... but theres a long road ahead!

define success and i'll define filmmaking satisfaction
it strikes me that the more 'successful' you become, the less it is about getting YOUR vision to the screen ...

2 tru miker.
At the end of the day to get your vision shown to the masses it needs to be one thing. Commercial. It makes no difference whether you've just written a "kick-ass" script which is perfect to the last detail or whether you have a god-given gift of filmaking. What it all comes down to is making money. Thats my cynical view.

I am in the industry and have been in it for several years. I have worked on some pretty big films. I would say that I am somewhat succesful, but I wouldnt say I have made it big. This isnt the first board that I have come across where people want to be the one with the most posts. Thats not what I am about, but to each his own.

One more thing and I can say this from experience. Most directors are not trying to do the same thing as every one else. Yes they are trying to make money, whats wrong with that? Just because a certain subject matter appeals to you doesnt mean that it will appeal to the masses. I know a lot of excellent filmmakers who know the craft who look for that smaller target audience and they do quite well, but they dont try to measure themselves up against Fox, MGM Paramount or Warner Bros as far as the box office goes.
The bottom line is this is a business and if you are not making any money at it you wont be in the business very long. If you are looking for a hobby, golf is a lot less expensive. But if you have a nice fat trust fund or something you can do whatever you want whether you make any of your money back or not.

I say, if you enjoy filmmaking, and you're actually able to do it, for whatever reason, then you've made it. The question is: How many filmmakers out there really feel "happy" just making films, and not reaping any rewards, benefits, or accolades? I like it when people actually enjoy my film, and tell me I did a good job. If someone is willing to pay me to make a film that "sucks", I might not feel as good. BTW, I've only part "made it", because I have a good film, but no one wants to show it, and I'm quite bitter, so if anyone has any encouraging anecdotes about how some of the guys who "made it", had a hard time when they started, by all means, let's hear it.

In my oppinion "making it" is having you film seen by others. I, personally, don't care much about accolades for my films, I'd much rather get my film seen by people, hopefully transferring some of the emotion that I put into it, through the film.

what is all this shit about makin it, eh?
is it fame or is it having a successfull career?
"made it" what is that?
i think that anybody who has regular work in film making (whatever trade) has made it - is that sucess? or is made it getting a film shown at cannes or an oscar or bafta?
- a lot, i mean A LOT of fuckin amazin people in the film industry are brilliant and just as paasionate about it as you are but just dont get that luck break, have they made it?... i feel that the question should be rephrased;
"Has anyone worked in the film industry and had any success?"

this sums it up to me. while I was with the sound recordist on wind in the willows he was telling me about how the boom-op has worked on many great films over several decades.
to this I remarked "so he's found his true vocation then.", to which the sound recordist replied "no, it's just a job"
and that taught me a great lesson.
